The two aunts of these young ladies lived for many years in the dower house upon my estate in Hampshire. Bold women certainly existed in the Middle Ages--Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales is evidence of this--but meek women were probably the norm, good Christian family ladies who wanted nothing more than to serve God and have children. They even threatened to cut the traces and take off the wheels from the carriage.
